About Us
Answers for the energy future
The Austrian Energy Agency offers answers for a climate-neutral future: the aim is to construct our lives and economic activities in a way that no longer affects our climate. New technologies, efficiency, and the use of natural resources such as sun, water, wind, and forests are at the core of our solutions. This ensures for us and our children a life in an intact environment and preserves ecological diversity, without being dependent on coal, oil, natural gas, or nuclear power. This is the missionzero of the Austrian Energy Agency.
More than 100 dedicated experts from a wide range of disciplines advise decision-makers in governments, businesses, administrations, and international organisations on a scientific basis. They support them in transforming the energy system and implementing measures to address the climate crisis.
On behalf of the Federal Government, the Austrian Energy Agency executes the climate protection initiative klimaaktiv. The Federal Government, all federal states, leading companies in the energy industry and the transport sector, interest groups, and scientific organisations are members of this agency.
We have structured our thematic priorities into eleven centres. More information can be found here.

Scientific association as a national research institution
The Austrian Energy Agency is organised as a non-profit scientific association. The president of the Austrian Energy Agency is the federal minister responsible for environmental protection. The two vice-presidents are the federal minister responsible for energy and a representative of the state governors nominated by the State Governors' Conference. If environmental protection and energy matters are combined in one ministry under a federal minister as president, one vice president, authorised by the president, is a member of the board.
As a national research institution, where both the Federal Government and the federal states as well as more than 40 energy-related and socially significant institutions cooperate, the Austrian Energy Agency serves as an advisory body and service centre, a central contact point, and implementation support for its members.
On an international level, the Austrian Energy Agency is a member of the European Energy Network, where energy research institutions and energy-saving institutions from 24 countries cooperate.
The Austrian Energy Agency is a competence centre for innovation-promoting public procurement (IÖB). The task of the Austrian Energy Agency is to provide complementary know-how in the form of sector- or funding-specific expertise. More information can be found on the BMK website.
Our network
We also cooperate with the assocation of federal states and energy agencies KLEA, the International Energy Agency, the Global Forum on Sustainable Energy, and other energy partners throughout the EU and internationally.
Our governance
The "constitution" of the Austrian Energy Agency is reflected in the publicly accessible statutes of the association (only in German).
Due to the high number of project commissions from public clients, the Austrian Energy Agency has decided to adopt a higher level of disclosure and transparency and commits to the voluntary application of the Federal Public Corporate Governance Code.
