Climate-neutral logistics
Cargoe CO2e neutral
CO2e balance sheet and proposed measures for climate-neutral logistics using the example of Cargoe GmbH & Co KG
The EU and Austria have set ambitious climate targets, particularly for the transport sector. Against this backdrop, climate protection is becoming a key challenge for companies in the logistics sector. A CO2e balance sheet (corporate carbon footprint) shows the emissions intensity of a company. This serves as a decision-making basis for the reduction and avoidance of greenhouse gas emissions, from which a strategy for climate neutrality can be derived. The company's success can also be measured and compared by means of a long-term climate strategy and an annual balance sheet. The results and ambitions can be communicated to the company's customers and other stakeholders.
With this in mind, the aim of this project was to calculate a comprehensive CO2e balance sheet for Cargoe GmbH & Co KG and to propose specific improvement measures towards climate neutrality. In a first step, the system boundaries were defined in close consultation with the company. The project balance sheet included the direct and indirect emissions (Scope 1-3) from the areas of energy, vehicle fleet, logistics, employee mobility, business travel, waste, catering, purchasing, procurement and buildings for the reference period and the identified business units (locations). The data was collected in cooperation with the client; employee mobility was surveyed by the Austrian Energy Agency. Life cycle assessment data and LCA software were used for the CO2e balance. The results were processed accordingly and checked for plausibility using an industry comparison.Scenarios for reducing greenhouse gas emissions at the sites and in the logistics area were developed on the basis of the data. In addition, a comprehensive catalog of measures with suggestions for improvement for the areas under consideration was drawn up and presented to the client.
