EEPLIANT 3

More transparency and safety for consumers when buying electrical appliances

The largest EU-funded Europe-wide market surveillance project to date tests air conditioning units, tumble dryers, lighting products and heating appliances, among other things. Objectives: Efficiency and energy savings as well as reliable information for consumers.

This is the largest EU market surveillance project in the energy sector ever funded by the European Union (EU). The Austrian Energy Agency is one of 29 partners from 20 EU Member States and Turkey that have joined forces for the project. The EEPLIANT 3 project is the continuation of EEPLIANT 1 and 2.

Correct product information and devices that fulfil minimum standards

The focus is on implementing the EU regulations on energy labelling and ecodesign, which require minimum standards and correct product declarations. Products are assessed and tested for their actual efficiency as part of the project. If the minimum criteria are not met, the manufacturer must adapt the product or it will be withdrawn from the market. These include products such as air conditioning units, ventilation systems, tumble dryers, water heaters and hot water storage tanks, lighting products and space heaters. "These measures are intended to ensure that consumers and professional purchasers in the EU market can consistently access products that fulfil certain minimum standards," explains Bogner. Transparent, complete product information and the energy label are intended to support the selection of particularly efficient and high-quality products.

Objectives of EEPLIANT 3

EEPLIANT 3 was not only developed to check the energy consumption of products on the EU market. It also serves as a platform and tool for building links and synergies between key stakeholders such as industry, trade and consumers and environmental NGOs.
These interactions should help to create a common European market for more energy-efficient products with high compliance values.
The project offers great added value for all stakeholders through knowledge transfer and better co-operation between the different EU market surveillance authorities. Challenges and priorities in this area will be identified and novel IT tools will be developed to continuously improve market surveillance and its effectiveness.

Project video

At the end of the project (March 2024), a short video will show the objectives, scope and results of the activities and the benefits that EEPLIANT 3 has achieved for consumers, businesses and the environment.
