Public spending on research, development and demonstration projects in the energy sector has been recorded in Austria since 1974. This survey is carried out by the Austrian Energy Agency on behalf of the Ministry of Climate Action (IEA research co-operation within the framework of open4innovation).

Public spending on research, development and demonstration projects in the energy sector totalled 310.8 million euros in 2023. The 2021 figure, by far the highest ever recorded in Austria, was therefore exceeded, with an increase of 96.3 million euros (an increase of 44.9 %) compared to 2022.
