Electricity Price Indices

Methodology

The indices are calculated using a standardised method based on quotations on the European Energy Exchange (EEX). A detailed description of the method can be found here (in German).

The indices only reflect the pure energy component. The total price of electricity and gas for end consumers is divided into the energy component, grid fees, as well as taxes and levies. Consequently, any fluctuations in the indices are likely to translate into only a subdued increase or decrease in prices.

More details and the monthly press release are available in German.

About the Austrian Electricity Price Indices

The Austrian Energy Agency has been publishing the Austrian Electricity Price Index (ÖSPI) since October 2008 as an independent information service for market participants. As of December 2023, the Austrian Energy Agency has expanded its service by calculating and releasing additional electricity price indices (Indices 2.0).

In order to meet different risk preferences, the Austrian Energy Agency has created three index types with varying time horizons: monthly, quarterly, and annual. These index types are further subdivided into total, base, peak, and off-peak indices. This means that a total of twelve new electricity price indices are now available. The different time horizons and sub-variants reflect energy suppliers' distinct procurement strategies. This pluralisation of indices enables a more comprehensive and transparent portrayal of dynamics on the energy markets.
