Gas Price Indices
Methodology
The indices are calculated using a standardised method based on quotations on the European Energy Exchange (EEX). A detailed description of the method can be found here (in German).
The indices only reflect the pure energy component. The total price of electricity and gas for end consumers is divided into the energy component, grid fees, as well as taxes and duties. Consequently, any fluctuations in the indices are likely to translate into only a subdued increase or decrease in prices.
More details and the monthly press release are available in German.

About the Austrian Gas Price Indices
The Austrian Energy Agency has been publishing the Austrian Gas Price Index (ÖGPI) since 2015 as an independent information service for market participants. As of December 2023, the Austrian Energy Agency has expanded its service by calculating and releasing additional gas price indices (Indices 2.0).
The gas price indices are based on gas futures products for the Austrian Market Area East CEGH VTP (contract abbreviation G8). They operate on the principle of tradability, where the settlement period (delivery period) of contracts included in the indices coincides with the validity period of the indices.
In order to take different risk preferences into account, the Austrian Energy Agency has developed four index types with varying time horizons: monthly, quarterly, seasonal, and annual.
